Four years ago, I left my family and my country to follow my dreams. I believe its one of the best decisions I've ever made but that doesn't necessarily ease this tightening in my chest when I think about all my loved ones back home. From This Side of the Pacific
You are a recollection of certain joys
I never could depart – the way soft
scents of pine recreates a summer,
the rise of swings above the humid earth,
how rushed monsoon winds leave rows
of palm trees dancing or how my hands
try to cup the rain before it finds its way
down valleys of corrugated rooftops,
down where children play on soggy streets,
drumming water puddles with slippered feet,
their laughter clear as a chorus of December
church bells chanting through the night -
Though I don’t always allow myself
to remember, you come to life here
washing and folding like the waves
of this infinite ocean that separates us.
